So, apparently Black Friday was big online this year. And we’re pleased to hear it. After all, grown men scrapping over blenders on the floor of the local Argos – it’s just a bit too Jeremy Kyle for us.
But we were even more pleased to hear that outdoor-wear brand REI did away with its Black Friday sales altogether. Instead, the company closed every single one of its 143 stores so that employees could go and enjoy the great outdoors. And everyone still got paid. REI probably missed out on some big profits, but they made a bigger statement about what they really care about as a brand. They even used the hashtag #OptOutside to encourage other brands to do the same thing.
Jerry Stritzke, CEO of REI, explained that “a life lived outside is a life well lived”. And good on him for living the brand. We’re already planning next year’s outdoor adventure in the local beer garden.
