Snail porridge. Meat fruit. Egg and bacon ice cream. Michelin starred chef Heston Blumenthal has already followed his food obsession to some pretty strange places. But now, he’s about to enter a whole new world in partnership with virtual reality designers, Marshmallow Laser Feast. (Which actually sounds a bit like one of Heston’s own creations).
The celebrity chef is teaming up with the London-based design team to develop an immersive dining experience led by VR. The precise ingredients are yet to be disclosed, but the creators have promised real time motion-capture technology, science, puppeteers and sound design as part of the mix.
VR is already becoming an influence in the worlds of music, fashion, gaming and art, but so far fine dining has remained seated in the realms of reality. But with a few restaurants attempting to create multi-sensorial dining experiences, the virtual space appears ripe for exploration. At least if the snail porridge turns up, there’s a chance it won’t be reality.
