Solid stores personal data and grants access to third parties through the user’s personal API…
The past 30 years must have been tough viewing for Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Over this time the World Wide Web, originally conceived as a technological force for democracy, has become a tool for corporate gain and political manoeuvring.
In an attempt to wrest power back from tech and social media giants, Berners-Lee is launching Solid – a system that promises to give users greater control over their own data. Using a plug-in POD, a little like a cloud-based USB stick, the system stores personal data and grants access to third party apps only through the user’s personal API.
If Solid reaches critical mass, then Google, Facebook and their like will no longer be a one-stop-shop for data. This could mean that brands will have to re-structure themselves around a new model of data ownership.
