If you’re constantly telling yourself that your glass of Merlot comes with health benefits (no, mum, it still doesn’t count as a serving of grapes) you’ll be pleased to hear there’s a spot in London where a tipple is practically doctor’s orders.
First Aid Box is a new café-bar in Herne Hill. Like any respectable middle-class-hipster environment, it serves coffee, fresh juices and fancy teas during the day. But come the evening, it offers cocktails based on modern trends in healthy eating. So you can try all kinds of virtuous options, from matcha and pistachio gin to blueberry and quinoa vodka.
OK, so the idea of having to mix our own drinks using pipettes and syringes does make us cringe a bit – just check out @wewantplates on twitter to see how annoyed people are by food and drink gimmicks (we especially love the soup served in a stiletto and the pickle inside a Russian doll). But founders Chris Edwards and Dave Tregenza have done a great job in Brixton’s award-winning cocktail bar The Shrub & Shutter – so we’re willing to give it a go.
After all, these mysterious mixtures could be a real tonic.
