In a bid to save South Korean commuters more time, Home plus (the Korean branch of Tesco PLC) have launched virtual stores on subway platforms so customers can shop while they wait for the train. (Big thanks to Dr Woo)
Commuters add items to their virtual baskets by scanning QR codes next to product images displayed on backlit billboards. After checkout, the order is delivered to their door once they return home from work. During the campaign, Home plus online sales increased by 130%, with over 10,000 customers trying the virtual stores.
According to Home plus, Korea is the second hardest working country in the world and fertile ground for convenience innovations. Of course, any idea that saves people time and effort is ripe for adaptation anywhere.
