A recent study found that from the 400 million tonnes of plastic we produce every year, 8 million tonnes of it ends up in our oceans. To put it another way, according to industrial ecologist Roland Geyer, that’s enough plastic to cover the size of Manhattan in an ankle-deep layer, 34 times!
Project Ocean is a partnership between The Zoological Society of London and Selfridges, hoping to raise awareness of the harm plastic can cause – and yet another example of how a brand with a conscience can elevate their standing among increasingly eco-consumers.
As such, Selfridges have removed all their single-use plastic bottles from store. Visitors can also enjoy Water Bar – a space where all manner of artists and innovators showcase their fresh thinking toward the way we use plastic.
