Japanese café pilots robot waiters…
Place your order at the pop-up Dawn Café in Tokyo, and you’ll receive courteous, efficient, almost machine-like service. That’s because your waiter is likely to be a robot.
The OriHime-D, developed by robotics startup Ory, is a 4-foot-tall robot controlled remotely by a human operator. Each one has built-in cameras and speakers so operators can hear and see what the robots hear and see.
Far from taking jobs away from humans, the project employs operators who are paralyzed, either through disease or injury. Operators use special software to issue instructions to the robots – to move, talk to customers or pick up objects.
The question remains though, how much to tip a robot?
