For many of us, recycling has become part of everyday life. Plastic here, newspaper there, tinfoil, erm, somewhere. But there are still huge parts of the world where all the rubbish gets chucked together – where recycling isn’t even considered.
To encourage more people to recycle in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Coca Cola has trialled what they’re calling ‘Happiness arcades’. (Ta, Jamie C.) The idea is simple. Instead of paying money to play, you place an empty Coke bottle in the slot. You then get to try your hand at a pong-style arcade game, the bottle gets recycled and everyone’s happy.
Just in case the moral of the story gets lost in all the excitement, the words ‘Remember to take care of our environment’ appear on the screen when the game is over.
The arcades were set up in six busy spots over six days, and drew huge crowds of intrigued passers-by. Thousands of bottles were collected, which were then turned into pellets to be turned back into Coke bottles. Hurrah.
