Bacteria? In clothing? Eeeuww! Under normal circumstances that would be a signal to grab the laundry gel and turn the washing machine up to a boil wash. But not at MIT. Researchers in the Tangible Media Group are actually introducing bacteria to help create electronics-free smart fabrics.
Fashioned into close-fitting sportswear, the bioLogic fabric covers the body’s natural heat and sweat points. The fabric is impregnated with a bacterium that naturally swells in moist environments. This causes vents in the fabric to open up when the wearer starts to perspire. Cool. Still slightly disgusting. But cool.
