Playing it straight misses the point of Pride
For two weeks every year, London Pride gives the LGBT+ community an opportunity to take over the city in celebration of diversity and gay culture. It’s also about unity, giving straight people the chance to stand shoulder to shoulder with their gay and trans friends.
So far, so good. But when the #LoveHappensHere poster campaign hit the streets, it provoked a huge backlash for its portrayal of straights who have somehow ‘accepted’ gay people. Result? London Pride was forced to pull the posters and apologise.
Next year, it’d be good to remember that Pride is all about the community it comes from. So enough of the straight talk, thank you.
