Something wonderfully spontaneous happened in Rotterdam recently. Dutch studios, DUS Architects and Studio for Unsolicited Architecture, hosted a street party beneath a dome of orange umbrellas. Inspired by the domes built by the late American architect, Buckminster Fuller, the ‘Bucky Bar’ attracted 300 revellers to the party (complete with DJ and drinks) before cops came in and closed the bar. Bah.
There was more to it than just spontaneous fun, though. Bucky Bar is the first in the series of proposals launched by the studios for the future development of Rotterdam. The creators say that the bar shows the power of space for impromptu gatherings and shelters for hosting parties and debates in the community.
