Shift the sofa and make room for the roots. In a new partnership, Swedish homewares giant IKEA has teamed up with British designer Tom Dixon in a mission to make ‘homes the new farmland’. With a new range of gardening products and tools available from 2021, the ideas is to get townies digging deep and growing their own food and medicinal plants at home.
“Food is a crucial part of everyday life, and IKEA wants to inspire and enable a healthier and more sustainable life,” says the retailer. “If more greens were to be grown in homes, it would have a positive impact on the planet with fewer transports, lower water usage and less food waste.”
The project gets a preview at the 2019 RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London in the form of a showpiece garden. This will extend over two levels: the first, a hydroponics ‘laboratory’ and the second, a botanical oasis – with a canopy of trees and plants chosen for their medicinal, health and environmental properties.
The thyme has come.
