The question is often asked, “Where will technology take us next?” With the unveiling of a joint project between ING, Microsoft and J Walter Thompson Amsterdam, the answer appears to be, “Straight back to the mid-17th century.”
A multi-disciplinary team set out to create a new masterpiece The Next Rebrandt by Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn based on a digital analysis of his existing works. Image makers and technologists employed 3D scans of Rembrandt’s paintings, machine learning algorithms and a paint-based 3D printer to create the digitally-engineered painting.
Using computers as brushes and data as paint, the finished portrait represents a fascinating transition from the digital world back to the analogue. Coming soon: Elvis Presley, the new album.
