To learn more about Lush’s pack-free products, customers can now use an image recognition app to reveal product information in AR.
UK cosmetics retailer Lush has developed an image recognition app as part of its campaign to reduce plastic waste. The app, Lush Lens is being piloted at Lush’s new Milan store which is stocked entirely with ‘naked’ packaging free products.
The challenge is, when packaging is removed, the main source of product information is lost. That’s where the app comes in. Lush partnered with Fairphone to provide in-store smart devices pre-loaded with the app. Customers point the device’s camera at the product they’re interested in. The software recognises the product and displays an AR information page about the product’s ingredients.
Lush Lens is powered by Tensorflow, Google’s powerful open source machine learning API. Following its introduction in Milan, Lush plans to launch Lush Lens globally. So pretty soon, the rest of the world will be going naked.
