New tech helps in the campaign to reduce global food waste…
Just give it a good squeeze. Or a good sniff. Until now, these checks have been the best available to help us decide whether food’s still fresh. But now, there’s a more accurate way to tell. Scientists from the German research institute at Fraunhofer have developed a portable infrared scanner that can determine if a food item has gone bad as well as how ripe it is.
It’s not just about avoiding soggy tomatoes with scientific accuracy though. According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Association, one third of all food produced in the world is wasted every year. So this device could become an essential tool for retailers, food manufacturers and consumers in helping to combat unnecessary food waste.
Sweet. (And still fresh)
