Todmorden is an ordinary small town in England, with an extraordinary story. Its residents claim they’ve discovered the secret that could save the planet. Incredible Edible is a ‘grow your own’ project that, in under two years, has got Todmorden folk to transform the way they produce their food and the way they think about the environment. Compared with 18 months ago, a third more townspeople now grow their own veg, almost seven in ten regularly buy local produce, and 15 times as many people are keeping chickens. (Thanks, Wadey)
The town centre is dotted with ‘help yourself’ vegetable gardens, the market groans with local meat and vegetables, and the pupils at all eight of the town’s schools eat locally produced meat and vegetables – every lunchtime.
What sets Incredible Edible apart is that it’s fun, it involves everyone in the town, it gives people ownership and room to be creative, and it’s a genuine grass-roots project. Its founders believe it could be a blueprint for every neighbourhood, and could easily be rolled out anywhere and everywhere.
