It’s good to know where your food comes from. But soon, you’ll be able to see the route it took to get to the store, and the amount of CO2 generated in its production and transportation, right at the point of purchase.
Unveiled at the Milan Expo 2015, the Future Food District concept store reveals a future in which Big Data provides a digital breadcrumb trail for each of its 1,500 products. Augmented reality allows shoppers to interact with products in new ways – all they have to do is point at a product and the back story is revealed on the screen above.
For store owners, it’ll be revealing to see how making the supply chain transparent could influence the decision to buy. For consumers meanwhile, this almost forensic in-store experience promises to make shopping feel just a little like an episode of CSI.
