Simple change makes sandwich wrappers more recyclable
Simply by adding a peelable tab to its takeaway sandwich wrappers, Waitrose is making them more recyclable. It’s all part of the retailer’s pledge to make all its own-label packaging widely recyclable, reusable or home compostable by 2025.
While the current cardboard wedge is recyclable, the difficulty comes when you try to separate it from the transparent film, which isn’t. Hence the change. And given that Waitrose sells over 26 million sandwiches each year, this could make a big difference to recycling rates.
Hopefully too, the new packs will be easier to open on a moving train, one-handed with a bottle of water tucked under your arm.
