Air New Zealand has launched a social media campaign focused squarely on the use of emojis. Smiley face. The airline is inviting travellers to send in their choice of New Zealand attractions, highlighted with emojis. In return, they receive a personalised interactive travel map.
The campaign targets millennials and Gen Zers who regularly use emojis as their lingua franca. This shift towards visual information reflects a changing priority for marketers. Five billion emojis are sent through Facebook Messenger every day, and since 2016, Twitter has allowed marketers to target individuals based on their emoji use.
