Financial Controller (6 Month FTC)

London / Hybrid working


Elmwood is a dynamic award-winning creative Design Agency, part of the wider MSQ group, and is now looking to appoint a Financial Controller on a 6 month fixed trem contract (with the possibility to extend or become permanent)

The role is an integral part of the business covering all aspects of financial and management accounting as well as financial control of the business operations.   Reporting to and working with the Elmwood London Finance Director, the role will include responsibility for the financial reporting of the London studio, and liaison with Finance Managers in New York and the Far East to report a collective submission to Group.

You’ll play an important role in supporting and educating colleagues in the Finance Team and the Studio on good day-to-day Finance practices and protocols, and our ideal candidate will enjoy this part of the role, as well as coaching more junior members of the Finance Team.

The Company uses the financial software, Paprika, our ideal candidate will have used the system previously.  A whizz on Excel would also be preferable.

The role is offered on a full-time basis (35 hours per week), although a 9 day fortnight or 4 day week could be an option

The Role in detail

· Providing effective control and management of all aspects of the Company’s finances and maintaining integrity of all financial information.

· Managing and working with the team to prepare and deliver month end management accounts including a reporting pack comprising P&L, Balance Sheet, cashflow to tight Group deadlines

· Prepare and present client and job profitability, time utilisation and recoverability analyses.

· Preparation of year end accounts including all schedules necessary for audit purposes.  Liaison with the auditors and management of the process in order to achieve a timely and efficient audit.

· Preparation of first draft of annual budget including year on year analyses to assist appropriate decision making on allocation of budgets.

· Indepth understanding of status of client jobs, proactively acting to ensure all jobs are controlled, closed when necessary and no unnecessary cost write offs are incurred.

· Intercompany billing and reconciliation of intercompany balances.

· Assisting with implementation and integration projects in London and the Far East (Paprika software implementation and upgrade, timesheets, job forecasting, financial reporting)

· Working with the Operations Director, the preparation and actioning of job profitability analyses which involve regular liaison with Account Directors and Managers to understand variances from expectations, and the commercial and financial aspects of client relationships.

· Monitoring of the cash balances and regular cash flow forecasting.

· Identifying systems and process improvements across business teams that will lead to greater efficiency, and managing the implementation and roll out.

· Meeting regularly with the Finance Director to provide regular reporting and proactive commercial advice.  Seeking out issues and putting a plan of action in place to resolve.

Skills and experience we are looking for

  • ACCA or CIMA recently qualified or currently studying towards
  • An indepth understanding of the deliverables of a finance function, with at least 2 years working as a Senior Finance Manager/Financial Controller
  • Able to work to tight deadlines
  • Excellent Excel skills, along with a good working knowledge of other Microsoft packages
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experirence of the Paprika accounting system
  • Great attention to detail and an understanding that the quality and accuracy of work underpins good financial reporting
  • Extremely well organised with the ability to juggle multiple priorities
  • Coaching of less experienced team member
  • Ideally worked in an Agency environment with a good understanding of Agency financial reporting and culture

Location and working hours

Based in our fabulous London studio but with hybrid working ( 2 days minimum in the Studio with the remainder working from home). (Note, we are currently following government guidance in relation to working from home)

We also offer flexible working hours to accomodate school runs and the like.


£50k-£60k salary, 5% pension contribution, 26 days holiday (pro- rata) plus a whole array of other benefits
