Common mistakes in English grammar,
and the simple rules that will keep you on track.

Capital letters

Go easy on capital letters – you rarely need as many as you think. There’s a tendency in organisations to use capitalisation to convey importance – so everything from concepts to the names of sub-committees get capital letters.

It looks awful, and is difficult on the eye, so wherever possible, don’t use them.

Exceptions of course, are:

And frankly, that’s quite enough without adding any more.

Also, go steady on the use of CAPITALS TO GRAB ATTENTION. They just hurt to read – and may make readers put your writing down, or in the bin.
