Friday 12th February:
Like mother’s milk

The designer, Karim Rashid, has developed the stylish ‘Iiamo Go’ bottles, a self-heating feeding bottle that gives parents-on-the-go the ability to serve body temperature milk to their baby without the use of electricity.

Iiamo Go is the only bottle in the world that combines portable, non-electrical, throw-away organic heating cartridges (Iiamo warm) and a patented heating technology that’s integrated into the bottle itself. The process is simple. Pour the mother’s milk, formula or milk powder in the bottle, insert the cartridge in the bottom of the bottle and then push, wait a few minutes and serve the milk.

The World Health Organisation recommends heating the milk to body temperature before served to babies and this is now possible no matter wherever you are – in the car, at the office, at the grandparents, in the supermarket, in a café or in the park. Also, in contrast to the vast majority of feeding bottles, iiamo go is produced in the 100% BPA-free material PP (polypropylene).

Put your best Facebook forward

With so many online photo opportunities these days, you’ve got to put your best face forward. Which is why Estée Lauder is offering customers a free makeover and online photo of the result.

Late last month, Estée Lauder offered shoppers at a store in Orland Park, Illinois, a chance to get a free professional make-over and photo for use on a social networking page, website or blog – complete with the Estée Lauder logo in the background. Consumers had only to book an appointment and come into Estée Lauder on Jan. 30 – no purchase was necessary.

Participating customers also received a complimentary 10-day supply of foundation. Similar events were held last fall in other Estée Lauder spots around the US, beginning with New York’s Bloomingdale’s in October, StyleList reported. More are planned over the next few weeks at locations in Canada.

A more down-to-earth airline

South African low-fare airline kulula.com recently unveiled a brand new livery. One of their Boeing 737-86N (ZS-ZWP / OK-PIK), called ‘Flying 101’ is covered with amusing quips and details about the plane.

The captain’s window is marked with ‘the big cheese – captain, my captain!’, the co-pilot’s window with ‘co-captain’ – the other pilot on the PA system’ and the jump seat is for wannabe pilots. This is a really clever way of engaging passengers, attracting attention and new custom – and for de-mystifying the usually quite mysterious world of air travel.

In addition, the following descriptions of plane parts can be found:

Galley (cuppa anyone?)

Avionics (fancy navigation stuff)

Windows (best view in the world)

Wing #1 and #2

Engine #1 and #2 (26 000 pounds of thrust)

Emergency exit = throne zone (more leg room, baby)

Seats (better than taxi seats)

Some windows = kulula fans (the coolest peeps in the world)

Black box (which is actually orange)

Back door (no bribery/corruption here)

Tail (featuring an awesome logo)

Loo (or mile-high club initiation chamber)

Rudder (the steering thingy)

Stabiliser (the other steering thingy)

ZS-ZWP (OK-PIK) = secret agent code (aka plane’s registration)

Front door (our door is always open … unless we’re at 41 000 feet)

Cockpit window = sun roof

Udder-ly lovely design

This is a lovely little piece of packaging design. The udder shapes reinforce the link between the source of the liquid and the end product. Not sure we’ll ever see this on shelves as it seems to be a student prototype, but a very neat way of shaking up design in the dairy category, nevertheless.

Monday 8th February:
Redesigning the downturn

Last spring, as retail sales were tanking worldwide, Italian design firm Alessi ramped things up. And recently, at its flagship NY Soho store, the company announced that it would unveil three collections in 2010 instead of the usual two, so as to accommodate the firm’s record number of products.

From curvaceous mixing bowls, designed in collaboration with the world’s most renowned pastry chef, to a cunning bathroom trash can, the spring collection offers an extraordinary marriage of form and function, as well as a resounding vote of optimism that the global economy is poised for a sharp rebound.

One of the most charming items was a blank wall clock that buyers can personalise with their own way of marking time. At the clock he created for the Soho shop, it was 10 after ‘Desire’ when the meeting broke up.

Other intriguing items in the collections was the set of pastry tools by Matali Crasset and Legion of Honor winner, Pierre Herme. The mixing bowl features a bright orange bump on its side, the better to cuddle while whisking. ‘You hold the bowl like this,’ Cravedi demonstrated, tucking the vessel in the crook of his arm. ‘The design is based on the carnal relationship chefs have with their bowls!’
