German supermarket makes a stand for diversity
Europe is in a state of flux. Some might say, a state of crisis. Pressure at the borders has raised the temperature around the subjects of national identity, immigration and ethnic diversity. In response, German supermarket Edeka has made a pro-diversity statement by clearing its shelves temporarily of all non-domestic products.
Customers at the Hamburg store were surprised to discover that ‘foreign’ products such as Greek olives and Italian tomatoes were missing. Instead they faced lengths of empty shelves and signs declaring, ‘A shelf is empty without foreigners’ and ‘Our range knows no borders’.
Clearly, in food retail as in life, diversity makes the world a richer, more colourful place.
